Edgar Valdez Villarreal, the alleged Mexican drug cartel leader nicknamed "La Barbie" since his days as a high school football player in Laredo, is waiting transfer to Atlanta in the Bexar County jail.
Villarreal, who most recently was in the news for staging a hunger strike with Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman before the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel escaped from the Mexican maximum security prison where they were held, was among 13 people extradited to the U.S. Wednesday.

Bexar County Sheriff Susan Pamerleau referred questions about Valdez to the U.S. Marshals Service, who referred questions to the U.S. Attorney's Office who said they couldn't confirm Valdez's whereabouts. However, sources confirmed to the Express-News that Valdez is in the jail, along with his father-in-law, Carlos Montemayor Gonzalez.

Both Valdez and Montemayor face cocaine conspiracy charges that carry a maximum sentence of life in prison in a federal court in Atlanta.
Mike Vigil, the former chief of international relations for the DEA and author of the book "Deal" about his time as an undercover agent, said Mexico made a show of extraditing high-ranking drug capos, but kept the cartels' top bosses in that country.
"They're second tier drug traffickers without question, and I think (Mexico is) a little bit hesitant to at least right now send the top tier, because the top tier will be able to provide information on high-level corruption that will embarrass the Mexican government even more," Vigil said.
Mexico is facing international embarrassment because of Guzman's escape, and could lose financial assistance from the U.S. if it doesn't show it's committed to combating drug trafficking, he said.
