This baby wombat survived but 10 others were run over and killed.

A camper who witnessed a number of wombats being killed at Kangaroo Valley, NSW, at the weekend claims he saw a group of men drinking heavily at the Australian campground before one of the men got into a vehicle and mowed down the animals.

Police say at least 10 wombats were believed to have been deliberately killed over the weekend at the Bendeela Camping Ground, on the banks of the Kangaroo River, about 20 kilometres north of Nowra. Four of the wombats were feeding mothers, and one joey was found alive in its mother's pouch.

Witnesses told police they saw a white four-wheel-drive travelling around the campground on Friday night and early on Saturday, before campers discovered the bodies of eight wombats on Saturday morning.

Police are investigating if a number of wombats were also killed on Saturday night at the same campground, after the bodies of two more animals were discovered on Sunday morning.

The dead animals, which were found scattered at 50 to 200-metre intervals, had injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle.

Matthew Thorn said he was camping at Bendeela with his family on Saturday night when he heard screaming and a vehicle being driven very loudly.

He said a group of men "had all been drinking very heavily" before he heard a vehicle take off.

"I heard a man screaming 'Stop', he was trying to get the keys off the driver to stop them from driving," Thorn said.

"I watched through the window of the tent and I saw a male driving a car off the road onto the grass where the campers were. I saw the headlights of the car change direction dramatically."

Thorn said the vehicle "did a doughnut and collided with the tree".

"He continued back down the road and I heard the thump when he hit a wombat," he said.

"We've been coming here about 15 years and have never seen anything like this before. The wombats are quiet and come right up to the campsites. It's very distressing to see people do that.

"I was concerned for my safety, my family's safety and everybody else's safety. It was very confronting."
