Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Posted September 17 2015 — 9:52 AM EDT

In one of the classiest segments of his first two weeks as host of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert took some time out of his show Wednesday night to honor Carol Burnett.

Burnett joined Colbert to promote The Carol Burnett Show: The Lost Episodes, a new special collection that features installments of her classic show that have never before appeared on DVD. The comedian discussed the joy of performing with her idol, Jimmy Stewart, on her final episode almost forty years ago.

Kevin Spacey then appeared on stage to honor Burnett, whom he considered his idol. The actor read a heartfelt poem, impersonating Jimmy Stewart’s classic slow drawl. The uncanny impression brought Burnett to tears as well as laughter.

Spacey ended the poem, saying: “The drinks on me all night at the bar because Carol Burnett is still comedy’s greatest star.”

Watch the clip above for the full moving tribute.
